Gestational Diabetes: The Real Story Behind The Condition
As a pregnant woman, you are at risk for gestational diabetes. In fact, it’s been estimated that there are as many as 135,000 cases of
gestational diabetes in the U.S. each year. The condition occurs when pregnant women who have never had diabetes before experience high blood sugar levels.
At this point, it’s unclear what causes gestational diabetes. However, there are some indications that it has something to do with hormones from the placenta which block the action of insulin in a mother’s body. The condition begins when a mother’s body cannot manufacture and use all the insulin required for pregnancy. In the absence of insulin, it is impossible for glucose to leave the blood and be transformed into energy.
In general, gestational diabetes does not lead to fetal abnormalities. Still, if the condition is not controlled, it can do harm to an unborn baby. An extra dose of blood glucose can permeate the placenta, causing the child to experience high blood glucose levels. The unborn baby’s pancreas then produces additional insulin in an effort to rid the body of the blood glucose. The extra energy the baby has received is then stored as fat, leading to the possibility of health problems such as breathing abnormalities and damage to the shoulders at the time of birth.
Because of the fact that gestational diabetes can harm you and your unborn child, you have to begin treatment quickly. Such treatment is designed to maintain healthy blood glucose levels. At times, such treatment may involve daily blood glucose testing and insulin injections. It undoubtedly will also include a specially-designed diet and daily exercise. The treatment program usually involves input from an entire health care team, including the obstetrician, nurse educator, and other members of the nursing staff.
By following an aggressive treatment program, you will be lowering your risk of a cesarean section birth—the kind of birth that can be customary with large babies. You will also be increasing the likelihood that you will enjoy a healthy pregnancy and that your baby will avoid unnecessary health problems.
It’s important to remember that gestational diabetes tends to disappear following pregnancy. However, if you experience
gestational diabetes, you have a two in three chance of developing the condition again in future pregnancies. In some cases, a pregnant woman’s diabetic symptoms may actually be indicative of type 1 or type 2 diabetes, rather than gestational diabetes. In such cases, the woman will need to continue treatment after her baby is born.
In addition, there does appear to be a link between gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes later in life. In fact, numerous women who have experienced
gestational diabetes end up having type 2 diabetes years after their pregnancies. This is not entirely surprising, given the fact that both
gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes involve insulin resistance. Still, it’s important to keep in mind that, through some basic lifestyle changes, a woman can possibly prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes after she’s experienced
gestational diabetes. It’s best to maintain constant contact with your family physician to ensure that you’re doing everything possible to keep type 2 diabetes at bay.
