Fighting for People’s Lives—The American Association of Diabetes and the British Diabetic Association
After you’ve received a diagnosis of diabetes, you can feel quite frightened and isolated. However, it is important to recognize that, over the years, a number of organizations have emerged to assist diabetes patients in their fight for life. Foremost among these are the
American Association of Diabetes and the British Diabetic Association, two top-notch organizations in the war against diabetes.
The American Association of Diabetes is a leading non-profit health organization dedicated to advocating on behalf of people with diabetes. It also sponsors ground-breaking research into possible treatment and cures, as well as providing information to diabetes patients, their families, public officials, and members of the general public. In its more than 60-year history, the association has conducted programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. As a result, it has managed to bring its life-affirming message to hundreds of communities across the U.S.
One of the most valuable services the association provides is its national call center. In one year alone, more than 350,000 people contacted the association with their questions or worries, seeking guidance about diabetes and how best to control it. Money raised by the association bankrolls research, information programs, and advocacy activities. The fundraising also helps to support the more than 20 million children and adults in the U.S. with diabetes. The association even operates an online store which features cookbooks, diet guides, self-care handbooks, and other educational materials for managing diabetes.
The association offers membership to both consumers and health care professionals. In addition, it encourages people to volunteer in order to support its life-saving work. Thousands of people take part each year in association events and fundraisers, showing the influence of the organization on a national level.
Meanwhile, the British Diabetic Association promotes research and educational outreach efforts on behalf of people with diabetes in the United Kingdom. The organization boasts more than 170,000 members who are inspired to join in order to safeguard their lives and the lives of relatives and friends who are now coping with diabetes. The organization lobbies the government for better standards of care and the best quality of life for diabetics. Organization leaders note that they are committed to finding a cure for diabetes in our lifetime. In fact, the organization lists its mission as improving “the lives of people with diabetes and to work toward a future without diabetes.”
Officials of the British Diabetic Association report that they have enjoyed numerous successes accomplishing the goals contained in their five-year plan. As a result, they believe they are in a strong position to achieve their goals through 2007, the final year of their most recent strategic plan. The organization has become highly respected by the medical community and by the U.K. public at large.
It’s hard to imagine what life would be like for diabetics in the U.S. and the U.K. if such organizations were not in existence. These lobbying groups have helped to put concerns about diabetes in the forefront of medical research. As a result, hope for a cure is now stronger than ever.
